Dear Club members,
The NEWPA annual meeting is required by our by-laws for the purpose of conducting club business, receiving reports, and election of officers. This year we will receive reports from each officer, propose goals for the next year, and elect a new vice-president, secretary, and Chewlah Member-at-large.
The meeting is going to be held on September 6, 2025 at the Yep Kanum Park in Colville at 9am.
Voting can be done in person or by filling out the proxy form and delivering it to a board member before voting begins.
It is important for you to participate in this meeting. Your votes will decide who will represent you on the Board of Directors and direction of NEWPA over the coming years.
Lee Dunbar

Let’s get together and assess (or re-assess) our skills so we know what to focus on in open play, drills, and clinics. A serve clinic will follow (if there is time) as that is how all games start. Participants who complete the Selkirk Clinic survey are automatically entered in a drawing to win a new paddle.

Greetings again fellow pickleball peeps! Jeff Tetrick here with the latest and greatest from the land of your local pickleball organization.
It's Summer! A great time to be outside enjoying pickleball with friends and family!
It was a great time at the Yep Kanum Days in Colville. Lots of enthusiastic players having fun and playing for a good cause, the Jeff Weeman Foundation. Thank You Kathy Ballew and Barb Weeman for all of your hard work putting the tournament together!
Speaking of tournaments, the annual Holliday Tournament is coming up on Sunday, August 24 in Colville. Valley Warriors Against Cancer will be there, and proceeds will go to them. There will be two round robin divisions: Crimson (intermediate) at 1:00, and Grey (advanced) at 3:00. Stay tuned and look for announcements from Kathy Ballew for sign ups and information.
Our intrepid leader Lee Dunbar has been busy offering clinics to help us get better. His next one is on August 2 in Chewelah. A Mastering Patterns in pickleball clinic from 9-11 a.m. and also a Beginners clinic starting at 11 a.m. A Selkirk Paddle Day is planned for August 15 at 11 a.m. in Chewelah. Then, on August 17, he has two Skills and Serve Clinics in Springdale, one starting at 8:30 a.m. and the other at 10:30 a.m. More information can be found on Heja. Thanks, Lee, for educating us!
August 8 is National Pickleball Day! Woohoo! This is getting serious…we now even have our own day! Make an effort to get out and enjoy some play on that day.
As I mentioned last month, our club is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which means your donations are tax deductible. Think about helping us grow the sport in our region with a donation!
If your membership dues have lapsed, please get your payment in so you can continue to get the benefits of being a member. The cost has been reduced to only $40, so sign back up today! It’s easy to do on https://newpa.club . Also, you can make donations there as well.
Our annual meeting is scheduled for Saturday, September 6 at Yep Kanum Park in Colville at 9:00 a.m.. Plan on attending to elect new officers and have your voice heard. Positions that are up for election are: Vice President, Chewelah at large, and Secretary.
Pickleball tip of the month: To Poach or not to Poach.
Poaching is the practice of moving on to your doubles partners half of the court to make the shot. If you are mobile enough, it can be a winning strategy to help your partner. We have certainly seen this in professional play, especially mixed doubles.
First thing, make sure your partner is okay if you Poach. I have had players step in front of me, and have not been happy, so communicate with your partner.
Next, you leave a big hole behind you when you move into the other half of the court, so make sure you can get back to cover, or have your partner cover.
I always think if I’m going to Poach, I better hit a winner, and that puts extra pressure on me. I’m not a very good poacher.
Bottom line…if it works for your partner and you then it can be a winning strategy. Communication is key.
Thanks for tuning in, and have a great rest of your Summer!

About Zeffy
NEWPA uses Zeffy to handle credit card transactions.
Zeffy is a not for profit organization that pays the processing fees credit card companies deduct from your on-line donations. This means the Northeast Washington Pickleball Association (NEWPA) receives the full dollar value of your donation. To do this Zeffy asks for a voluntary "tip" that Zeffy uses to pay processing fees for thousands of not for profit organizations. Think of your Zeffy "tip" as a way of paying it forward to benefit the NEWPA and other charitable and not for profit organizations.
